Day One

"Learning to Paddle Upstream:  Working with High-Conflict Impasse"

Impasses associated with high-conflict divorce and separation are multifaceted and complex.   Day one, “Learning to Paddle Upstream” addresses the importance of identifying and managing parental resistance. Through lecture, case review, group activities and role play, participants will learn interventions designed to navigate the rough waters commonly demonstrated by high-conflict parents. Susan and Ann Marie will introduce a unique conceptual framework for recognizing types of parents encountered in in acrimonious separations. Their 5 Types of High Conflict Parents offers the master parenting coordinator a way to identify the type of dynamics demonstrated by each parent and then predict the best intervention to address their impasse. The degree of parental resistance is determined by multiple factors including the parent coordinator’s own style and personality.  Rather than paddling upstream, the PC will uncover the parents’ unconscious and unspoken goals, recognize the power of belief perseveration and learn to minimize the negative influence of others outside the biological team.

Day Two

“Navigating Alienation, Allegations and Ethical Dilemmas”

During day two, participants learn to navigate the rapids associated with the impasses accompanying  Alienation & Other Allegations.  Alienation has and continues to be a source of controversy and concern for professionals in the field of divorce and family separation.  Participants will continue the dialogue and explore alienation within the context of attachment theory.  Professionals will be exposed to a broad yet comprehensive view of situations that arise that lead to children resisting contact with a parent.  Methods of identification and interventions suited to the work of a parenting coordinator will be highlighted.  Among these techniques, participants will explore alternative interventions including the use of alienation continuum, PA genograms and the use of an estrangement scale to document progress in the reunification process.

Ethics, professional biases and standards of care will also be discussed through lecture and case studies. Professionals will be asked to identify their own biases to better monitor the influence they may have over the parenting coordination process..  The master parent coordinator must identify and manage these obstacles to successfully steer parents towards calmer waters.
