Questions & Answers for Children About Divorce
A Four Hour Seminar for Children

It is not uncommon for divorcing parents to think that they have provided all the necessary information their child needs when in reality most children need more opportunity for their questions to be answered. Changes provides an emotionally safe environment in which children may have all their questions answered without worrying about their parent's reactions.

Each group deals with the most commonly asked questions by children (typical of that age group) while experiencing family reconstruction. The questions covered in each of the three age groups also reflect the documented research regarding how a child's developmental stage may impact his or her reactions to a divorce.

Changes is written by psychotherapist, Susan Boyan who is also co-author of Cooperative Parenting & Divorce and Parents R Forever.   Changes coincides in content with the Children of Divorce Parenting Seminar, written by Jerry Amos and Marti Kitchens . However, it may also be used with any other four hour divorcing seminar.

The primary goals for each age group are:

1. To provide answers to important divorce questions

2. To reduce confusion and misplaced sense of responsibility

3. To normalize the grief process the whole family is going through

4. To provide a safe environment in which to share openly with their peers

5. To empower the child to deal with their feelings in a constructive manner

6. To providing children with age appropriate coping skills

7. To help children look ahead with hope

Changes is a 125 page four hour seminar for children who have parents going through a divorce. The format provides three separate curriculums for age groups 5-8, 9-12 and 13-over. Changes may be completed in either a four hour seminar or offered in one hour classes over a four week period. Changes seeks to provide reassurance while helping children identify and express their feelings in a safe environment. Through interactive activities such as games, role play and projects, the Changes program seeks to provide age appropriate answers to common questions. Sample questions that are answered in the Changes program include:

  •  What is a divorce?
  •  How will my parents act now?
  •  Where will I live?
  •  What will change and what will remain the same?
  •  Can I make my parents get back together?
  •  Can I still love both my parents?
  •  Sample teen questions include:
  •  How can I keep from being caught in the middle?
  • How will I handle embarrassing moments now that my parents are single?
  • How will my parent’s divorce affect my choices?
  • How much do I want to know or how much do I need to know?

The program also includes lists of materials needed for each group and:

  • Letters to the parents
  • Parent reading list.
  • The Material Section includes masters for many of the activities such as role plays, same and different cards and dilemma cards. Changes comes in a 125 page three ring binder format.
